Kollu Chutney Recipe or  Horse Gram Chutney Recipe. Also called as Kollu paruppu in tamil and horse gram in english and Ulavalu ('ఉలవలు') in telugu, it is prescribed for persons suffering from  jaundice or Water Retention, and as part of a weight loss diet just like radish. It is considered helpful for iron deficiencies and is considered helpful for maintaining body temperature in the winter season. Should consume in winters. (Source : Wiki)


Kollu Chutney Recipe - Ulavalu or Horse Gram Chutney Recipe

Ingredients for Kollu Chutney Recipe - Horse Gram Chutney Recipe

1. Tamarind Pulp - 1 tsp (soaked)
2. Garlic cloves - 2 to 3
3. Dry Red Chillies - 3 to 4
4. Coriander Seeds - 1 tsp
5. Cumin Seeds - 1 tsp
6. Salt - As per taste
7. Oil - 2 tsps

To Dry Roast:


1. Horse Gram - 1 cup
2. Ground nut  - 10 nuts

To Temper:


1. Mustard Seeds - 1/2 tsp
2. Cumin Seeds - 1/2 tsp
3. Curry Leaves - 5 to 6
4. Sesame Seeds - 1 tsp
5. Oil - 2 tsps

Procedure - How to make Kollu Chutney Recipe

1. In a kadai dry roast horse gram and groundnuts without oil and keep aside.

2. In the same kadai add 2 tsps of oil and add coriander seeds, cumin seeds, dry red chillies, soaked tamarind pulp and garlic cloves. Fry for a minute, switch off the flame and let it cool down completely.

3. In a mixie jar add these fried items, dry roasted horse gram, ground nuts and salt and grind to a fine powder. 

4. Do not add water while grinding. It comes to a moist powder not loose powder.

5. Once it's ground well, dish out and temper with ingredients under temper.

6. Kollu Chutney Recipe or  Horse Gram Chutney Recipe is ready to serve. Can be served with steamed rice, dosa, idlis as idli kaaram since we didn't grind it to a thick paste.
